PD for Learning Targets

In a recent professional development session centered on crafting effective learning targets for elementary arts classrooms, educators explored how these targets can transform teaching and learning. Learning targets provide essential focus and direction by clearly defining what students are expected to learn, ensuring alignment with standards and instructional goals. More than just instructional tools, they empower students by promoting agency—helping learners understand their objectives and take ownership of their growth. The session emphasized the importance of including four key components in each target: an action verb, specific content, measurable criteria, and a relevant context. Educators also engaged in collaborative strategies like curriculum mapping and professional learning communities to ensure targets are developmentally appropriate, measurable, and standards-aligned. This iterative process, grounded in student data and reflection, leads to stronger outcomes and a more purposeful arts education experience.
