🎨 Measuring What Matters: How the ACV Index Promotes Equity and Inclusion Through the Arts

In 2024-2025 I applied for a DESE grant to support Equity work as the Director of Fine & Performing Arts. I led a team of 12 district constituents through the ACV Index process.
In the pursuit of creating more inclusive and culturally responsive schools, Massachusetts has developed a powerful tool: the Arts & Cultural Vitality (ACV) Index. This voluntary self-evaluation resource helps schools examine and celebrate their arts and cultural assets, while identifying areas for growth in equity, access, and participation.
Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all rubric, the ACV Index encourages schools to reflect on their unique cultural footprint—honoring the voices of students, families, and educators. It is grounded in the belief that arts education should not only inspire, but also reflect the diversity of experience and identity in each school community.
The ACV Index is organized around four key levers:
- Infrastructure – Examines systems, policies, and resource allocation with a focus on dismantling historical barriers.
- Opportunity – Measures the equity of access for all students, families, and staff to engaging, culturally rich experiences.
- Participation – Focuses on inclusive and representative involvement across the school community.
- Impact – Looks at the measurable effects of arts and culture initiatives on learning, teacher efficacy, and school climate.
Though funding is not currently available for FY25, professional learning opportunities remain open to all Massachusetts arts programs, with PLCs running from December to May. Schools interested in using the tool can also reach out directly to DESE for support.
At a time when school climate and belonging are more essential than ever, the ACV Index helps educational leaders place arts and culture at the heart of equity work—not as an afterthought, but as a core driver of student and community growth.
